Avalanche in 'Zone Interdit', La Grave, 15 Feb 2006

Now you know why they call it the forbidden zone - after watching spindrift sliding down the side of La Meije for most of the morning, a serac broke off on the the Glacier de la Meije, starting a small powder avalanche at around 2pm:





Although you mostly couldn't see the ice blocks falling, you could hear them very clearly...

The photographs were taken from the safety (in this case) of a nearby moraine ridge.
